We all know life has its ups and downs and sometimes the downs can really test you to your limit.  Being positive in these times can be challenging.  There is a powerful advantage in being able to notice the good and this skill will help you navigate the situation in question.

Learning to be positive doesn’t make you woolly or someone who buries their head in the sand.  It’s a great way to help you flow through tough times in a useful way and recognise the bad times will be followed by the good ones.

Here are a few ideas to help you when the going gets tough:

Is this worth getting upset over?

Sometimes it is perfectly reasonable to be upset and it helps you through the process of healing.  Other times, it’s just a habit that you have got used to running.  It’s these times when you can have a choice whether to be upset or to let it go and move on.

What can I learn from this?

Whilst no one wants to go through challenging times, there is often a lesson you can take from it.  I’ve learnt many lessons from some of the most challenging times such as:

  • Knowing who the most important people are in my life
  • Time is my most precious commodity and to use it wisely
  • To make my health and wellbeing my priority, or I’ll be no good to others

What is the positive I can take away from this?

Even in a situation that is terrible, there is usually a glimmer of positivity somewhere.  With the horrors of worldwide events covered in the news, there is another side to the story, one of love and hope from communities pulling together.

How is this making me a better person?

Both good and ugly experiences help to define who we are.  The times when you discover how strong you are, are usually the times that are the most challenging.

Can I control the situation?

If you can’t control the situation directly, the only thing you can do is control your response to it.  Knowing there is nothing you can do and letting go of trying to control something will release your energy to be put to better use.

What can I do right now to feel better?

Ensure you’re being kind and compassionate and give yourself a little TLC (tender loving care).  What is something small you can do for yourself, right now to help you feel better?  For me it will be taking time out to walk Bella or phone a friend.  Have a few things that give you a little self-love that you can call on when you need a little comfort in your life.
