A Little Declutter Can Have Amazing Affects

cluttered shelves blogIf you have clutter in different areas of your life and work, it can completely overwhelm you and hang over you like the proverbial black cloud.  This in turn will adversely affect your levels of stress which will have a detrimental effect your overall health and wellbeing.  Do you find yourself procrastinating, lacking focus and generally feeling stuck?  Well maybe it’s time to start decluttering!

Clutter can be found in many areas and even the most organised of us will have somewhere that requires a little attention.  At home we often have somewhere that we store things whether it is the garage, loft, shed, a spare room or even a drawer that could do with a little clearing.  What about your emails, filing, or desk?  Another great place to give attention to is your wardrobe, is this stuffed full of things that haven’t see the light of day in the last year?

If you consider decluttering everything in one go it will be completely overwhelming unless you are someone who only has one small cupboard to face.  You do need to commit to doing this so START TODAY and stop putting it off any longer.  The sooner you start, the sooner you will reap the rewards.

Where to start? 

Start by making a list of the areas you want to target and then decide which is most important to do.  Alternatively, to get you an early win,  choose the one that is easiest so you start to see results quickly.

Once you have decided your starting point, pick one element, for example, if your target area is your office, start with your desk or that pile of filing that is falling over.  Always start with one thing at a time, chunk down the job into individual tasks within each area.  Even if you were to clear one drawer every day, it wouldn’t be long before a whole chest of drawers was completed and then you can move onto the next thing.

Another way of chunking down this task into manageable pieces would be to set a time that you will commit to decluttering every day.  Just 20 minutes a day would add up to 10 hours a month, imagine what you will have achieved in 10 hours, how clear your desk/garage/wardrobe would be this time next month.

You will get a great sense of achievement by having a good clear out and you never know, you may even come across something you’d completely forgotten you had, or something that has been missing for ages.

When clearing out, consider what you are going to do with everything you are getting rid of.  You could sell some items online and get a little extra cash to treat yourself with.  Alternatively you could give it to your local charity shop or if it really doesn’t have any value, take it for recycling at your local centre.

As you start to declutter areas of your life, you will notice that a sense of peace and calm will return.  You will be able to find things easily, allowing you to focus what is important to you without being overwhelmed and held down by the weight of all the ‘stuff’ you have accumulated.

  2. Make a list of the areas you want to tackle
  3. Break the clearing down into individual, manageable tasks
  4. Set a specific amount of time every day to de clutter and build it into your daily routine
  5. Allow yourself to recognise what you have achieved at every stage of the clearing and give yourself a pat on the back for doing a great job.
